Mary Bannatyne Armitage was born on 9 April 1849 in the English Channel at sea, on the voyage out on the ship "Mary Bannatyne", the date claimed by family members was 9th April 1849, this was the day after the ship sailed. The family arrived in Australia 26 Jul 1849.3,1,4,2 She and Harry Cornelius Bray were married on 22 December 1870 in St Silas, Waterloo, NSW, Aust.3,1,5,4 She died on 30 August 1926, at age 77, in 9 Riley St, Kogarah, NSW, Aust, Cause of death was Myocarditis.4,6,7 She was buried on 1 September 1926 in Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland, NSW, Aust, grave 7, section I.4,6
Mary Bannatyne Armitage was also known as Mary Valentine Armitage.1,7 She was also known as Mary Bannatyne Bray.1,3 She had reference number NSW. . The use of the middle name Valentine is probably a deliberate choice of Mary as she gave this name when married and also when the daughter Edith was born. However I believe her real middle name probably was Bannatyne as this was the name of the ship she was born on.1 She resided in Chippendale, NSW, Aust, in 1870.1 She resided in Wyndham St, Alexandria, NSW, Aust, in 1877.3 She resided in Woids Ave, Hurstville, NSW, Aust, in 1894.8,9 She resided in Bellevue Pde, Hurstville, NSW, Aust, in 1901.10 She resided in Woids Ave, Hurstville, NSW, Aust, from 1912 to 1923 The Woids Ave and Bellevue Pde Hurstville (Kogarah) addresses are virtually interchangeable in that Harry Cornelius originally purchased lots 20 and 22 Woids Ave. Immediately behind lot 22 was the Bellevue Pde address that the family also owned. This was occupied by one of his sons and has remained in family hands until recent times.5
